Workshop 7

The Caribbean Cottage- ¼"
with Debbie Young
$155
Wednesday November 2 - Thursday November 3,
9:00AM-4:30PM
This small one room vacation get-away is a place where no matter
what is going on in your real life, you can escape to where the
sun is warm, the skies are blue and the water is sparkling turquoise.
The colors of the sun , sky and water are reflected in many of
the paint choices throughout the Caribbean, and in this little
cottage as well. Originally designed for the Quarter Connection
cruise, the house represents Chattel houses found throughout the
Bahamas. The Chattel house was designed by the early African plantation
workers. Since the workers did not own land, and disputes between
land owners often occurred, the Chattel houses could easily be
dismantled and moved from one plantation to another. Students
will learn a bit about the architecture of the Chattel houses
as they build and assemble this house. A detailed ceiling adds
dramatically to the house, but because it is cast it cuts the
assembly time down dramatically as well.
Student Supplies and Tools Needed: Instructor will provide
cutting boards, tacky glue, Zap-A Gap, Yes glue, waxed paper,
paper towels, sand paper, emery board, paints, stain, water varnish
and garbage bags. Students will only need to bring a very basic
tool kit including a gluing jib (Lego is fine) an assortment of
good paint brushes ( a wide one for painting the house, one for
spreading Yes glue and an assortment of fine brushes for details),
a pencil, metal ruler, X-acto knife with fresh blades & scissors.
