Workshop 39

Designing the Straw Hat in Miniature
with Rachelle Spiegel
$65
Friday November 4, 1:30PM-5:00PM
Throughout history, hats have been constructed of straw. By varying
the width and shape of the brim and the shape and height of the
crown, the same construction techniques may be used to create
hats of many periods and styles; from the brimless toque, to the
popular gipsy hat of 1790-1830, the oversized Edwardian boater
and the 1950's cartwheel. Students will construct a basic straw
hat and learn how it can be varied to create a wide variety of
historical headgear. Several trimming techniques employing vintage
ribbon work, paper flower construction, feathers, beads and findings
will be demonstrated, accompanied by written instructions. Students
will receive enough materials to create several hats.
Student Supplies and Tools Needed: Small sharp fabric scissors,
scissors for paper, fine pointed tweezers, ruler, needle tool,
rose maker tool, small tray or box for tiny beads and ribbons
and glue applicator (glue syringe or bottle with small tip). F
or general use, regular white glue such as "Tacky" or
"The Ultimate Glue" is fine. Also, students should bring
magnification, a small light and extension cord if needed.
