Workshop 25

King of the Wind: The Godolphin Arabian
with Deb Mackie
$145
Friday November 4, 9:00AM-4:30PM
Marguerite Henry's retelling of the classic story of the Godolphin
Arabian has long been a favorite for those of us smitten with
horses at a young age. Her story traces the life of Sham, the
renowned horse that fathered a line of outstanding race horses.
Among those whose ancestry is traced back to the Godolphin Arabian
are Seabiscuit and Man o' War. In the workshop, we will pay tribute
to this magnificent stallion and dress him with elegant Arabian
accessories. Students will be given a brief demonstration on Breyer
resin horse model prep and repair for customization, with a printed
"how to" handout and materials source list to take home
for future reference. Students will then be given a "prepped"
1:12 scale resin horse, and learn to realistically pain and detail
its features. While the paint is drying, students will create
mane and tail "wefts" from either English Viscose fiber
or Tibetan Lamb's wool. Then we'll fit the horses with a pre-made
saddle form, and learn to trim and drape a "royal" blanket
over its back. Next, students will apply and style the mane and
tail of their horse. For the crowning touch, the horses will be
fitted with a jeweled bridle and reins. Participants will finish
with a noble steed fit to carry the Sultan himself! (Horses may
vary on pose depending on availability of models).
Student Supplies and Tools Needed: All materials and tools
will be provided by the instructor, but students are welcome to
bring their own if they wish. Also, students are encouraged to
bring their own accessories (and riders!) for their horses if
they wish.
